💭 Diverse Emotions: Dogs, like humans, have their ups and downs. They feel joy, but they also have their ‘less positive’ moments.

As responsible guardians, let’s be understanding and compassionate during both cheerful and challenging times.

😢 Acknowledging Grief: Dogs mourn too. When faced with loss or uncertainty, they need our support. Be there for them, offering comfort and understanding.

🧠 Creating Core Memories: Cherish meaningful moments with your dog. Experiences which exhibit strong emotions have a lasting effect, so do your best to make them good ones.

To speed up your training, associate tapping your foot with the presence of a treat. This technique can be especially helpful if you have a dog that struggles to find dropped treats. Just tap your foot near the treat, and your dog will learn that the toe tap signals a reward!

Fed up of your dog only listening to you when you have food in your hand? That’s because you might unintentionally be bribing them!

While it’s okay to use food as a lure initially, relying on luring constantly can hinder your dog’s ability to respond to cues without it 🧀 ❌ 👂

For essential life skills, like loose lead walking or keeping their feet on the ground when greeting someone, you’ll want your dog to understand markers. Because it’s unlikely you’re ALWAYS going to have a treat ready in your hand ‘in the real world’.

Using a marker bridges the gap between you GIVING the marker and then GETTING the treat.

Think of markers as a thumbs-up signal associated with a reward. You can use clickers, marker words, or hand signals (especially useful for deaf dogs). Once your dog grasps the concept of markers, transition those important lifeskills away from using food as a lure. Your familiar hand gestures can become the foundation for hand signals as you move from luring to marking and rewarding 🖐️ 👍👐👊👆🙌👋

💡And a pro tip: Be cautious with rustling bags! Dogs can associate that sound with training time, responding only when they hear it. To avoid this, keep treats in an easily accessible pocket or pouch, so your dog doesn’t rely solely on hearing (or seeing) that you’ve got a pack of treats! 🎒

Here are some tips to consider when evaluating a dog trainer and their work:

#1 Observe Body Language: Pay attention to the dogs being trained. Their body language can reveal a lot.

#2 Look for signs of relaxation:
👀 Eyes: Relaxed eyes without hard stares or whale eye (whites of the eye showing).
🐕 Tail: Neutral tail positions (not tucked between legs or held high and stiff). Relaxed wagging is preferable…think 🚁
👂 Ears: Relaxed ears (not pinned back).
👄 👅 Mouth: A relaxed mouth, with panting appropriate to weather is ok. Stress-related excessive tongue showing (spatulate) or excessive lip licking may indicate tension.
🐩 Posture: Should be generally relaxed and loose.

#3 Behaviour vs. Stress: Remember that a dog can behave well while still feeling stressed. Just like students, dogs can perform impeccably even when anxious. Consider trainers who create a positive, confidence-building environment for your dog.

#4 Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off or if you notice signs of stress in the dogs, explore other options.

Remember, a good trainer not only teaches skills but also ensures a positive experience for both you and your dog.

🤕 Physical Strain: The constant motion of chasing a ball can strain your dog’s joints and muscles, especially when they jump, twist and skid.
🦴 Joint Issues: Repetitive ball chasing may lead to joint problems, including conditions like arthritis.
🧠 Mental Overload & Fixation: Focusing solely on the ball can mentally overwhelm your dog, preventing engagement in other enriching activities. Fixation can also lead to obsessive and guarding issues.
🧘 Overall Well-Being: Balancing playtime with other forms of stimulation ensures a healthier, happier dog. Getting your dog to ‘find’ the ball allows them to use their nose which is mentally stimulating, but low impact.
🤔 Increase in Hyperactivity: ball throwing is often used to tire a dog. In can in fact have the opposite effect, with dogs struggling to calm after an adrenalin fuelled ball chasing session!

💭 Dreaming and Processing: REM sleep is when dogs process the day’s events and experiences, similar to humans.

🥰 Emotional Health: Adequate REM sleep is associated with better mood and emotional resilience in dogs.
