- ditch the puppy pads, they muddy the rules about where is and isn’t appropriate to toilet.
- put toileting on cue.
- use enzymatic pet cleaners.
- do NOT reward them the moment they START toileting in the correct place. You might interrupt them.
- don’t scold mistakes, learn from it and move on.

Why teach ‘middle’?

10 years ago I’d have seen little use for this exercise, but it’s now probably one of my favourite things to use ‘in the real world’.

Why?
#1 Nobody will touch them whilst they’re there (imagine the awkwardness if they did!).
#2 It’s a controlled position. If my dog is sat in between my legs they aren’t being a nuisance to anybody else. I know exactly where they are. I can reward them whilst they’re in the position and easily hold their collar if needed.
#3 It’s great for setting my dog up for a ‘wait’ for agility. I face the direction I want my dog to look and BINGO, the dog is positioned perfectly.
#4 It can be used as a recall.
#5 My dog feels safe there. If they’re in that space, I will be an advocate for them and keep others away.

Pain has a profound impact on behaviour, for both

Pain has a profound impact on behaviour, for both humans and dogs alike.

Consider a dog that isn’t feeling well, their behaviour may shift dramatically. They could become unexpectedly reactive to previously neutral triggers like other dogs or sounds.

Reflect on a time when you were in pain - did it make you a bit short tempered with others? Probably. Plus atleast you could tell people why you were grumpy.

That’s why, when a dog starts showing unwanted behaviours, a decent trainer or behaviourist will first consider the possibility of pain. We’re not just talking about obvious injuries (though those certainly affect behaviour), but also the more subtle discomfort that dogs, as survivalists, often conceal (and yes…if your dog is limping, they ARE in pain).

To truly determine if pain or discomfort is at play, we rely on professionals: vets, vet physiotherapists, hydrotherapists, massage therapists etc. Pain assessment will start with initial physical exams but could include further investigations such as X-rays, ct scans, ultrasounds, bloods etc etc. They could include analysing the dog’s gait to see if they move their body ‘normally’. With the guidance of the vet, a pain trial could be considered where pain meds are used over a reasonable period of time to see whether there is an impact on behaviour.

So, if your trainer or behaviourist insists on a thorough pain assessment, please listen to them. We know it will cost money in the short term, but it’s about ensuring that you’re not investing in training or behaviour modification that might not work, because it won’t address the root cause, if that cause is pain.

The video shows Niffler doing hydro at @pawsomepaddles . Niff is my dog who broke her back at five months of age after colliding with a tree. She also has hip dysplasia. To the average person she appears not to be in any pain, but she will always have sensitivities and these will more than likely, always affect her behaviour.
